Random Oldish Unbloged Pictures - Pen and Marker

Here are a few more slightly dated pen and marker drawings. A lot of them are from when I was a bit better at following Sketch Dailies.

I particularly like the Heffalump

This guy was based of a wall painting in the Grand Canyon

Mistborn Thumbnails

So, I want to Mistborn piece (or two) for the upcoming Salt Lake Comic Con and so I am think Vin. Here are 16 thumbnails I did to narrow in a little on a composition ...

... from which I picked (with the aid of my beautiful assistant*) 4 to detail up slightly and ...

... from those 4 I want to designed which to use as the staging grown for the main event.
I am thinking bottom left. Maybe?

Shelling out Shel

The Crawfee!
Now shown in pre-drunk coffee

The Underslung Zath
I love this guy ... hes like a snipe-yak!

The Zrbangdralonk
As ugly as he is unpronounceable

I am a bigger fan of how the first set turned out ... save for the Underslung Zath ... he is my favorite right now. Again, if you want to know why these monsters exist you must read Shel Silverstein's Dont Bump the Glump poetry collection ... out loud ... to your neighbor's goldfish ... twice.

Digital Painting Class - A7 - Summer a.k.a. El Finiale AND The Dreaded Lazer Horse

The end of a micro-era. This was my last assignment of the Don's Digital Painting class. I feel like crying. Wait, no, I am crying. These are not tears of joy, these are big fatty fat fat alligator tears of woe. Or maybe whoa ... not, that is horses. Anyways, here is a thing.

That is the final version. In four-hour retrospect the tower the bat/dragon thing is on looks like an erroneous line, the bird-lizard-llama of justice's belly shield looks like an egg sack, and the composition was against me from the start (as I was well warned by my superiors). Other then that ... I like it. At least I forced myself to work on the goals I set. Next time ... MORE DRAMATIC and ONE FOCAL POINT.

This is a more the older version of the thing.

And here is another Heckert tribute because I would like to think I made a friend in this class ... and I could think of no better way to pay my respects than by shamelessly copying celebrating his sketches ... again.

Here is cool --> Mind Dump

The Last Week of Don's Digital Painting class

The end of Block A summer classes is here, this is the last week ... this is the end. The word of the week is 'Summer' and that is lame so I am choosing to go with option B - anything else.

This is what I have so far, after two days

A little fan art to sooth my inner kitty ...

I present Death's Hand from Biowares first original IP - JADE EMPIRE
I haven't gotten to bed yet and I had a pen and ink sketch of this charecter from a while ago I have been meaning to try and color digitally ... so, yep, there it is is in all its 70% complete glory. Bask.

Another Artist Tribute (because banans are yellow)

Shamelessly stealing HONORING Zach's art was a blast ... so I am did the same time again but this time the tribute is of Shel Silverstein and his poetry collection Don't Bump the Glump ... which people should read and/or buy for it is fun. I like fun. I am not going to put the poems with the monsters that match them just do be a jerk ... and out of fear of copyright laws I don't understand ... and because bananas are yellow.

The GLUMP!
Don't bump the glump!

The Quick-Disguising Ginnit
It is kinda like a Half-Life headcrab ... modified to kill Indiana Jones

The Brocken Dickeree

Digital Painting Class - A6 - Mask

Another week, another painting in which I have gotten better but not by half the rate I wished to do so ... My goals for next week, after seeing this done, are 1) Daylight painting 2) Epic landscape 3) Be better / do better.

Frozen - a two artist collaboration

This is my young friend Libby (daughter of two of my friends from the golden days of yesteryear). Together we tag-teamed this masterful drawing of ... Anna? Hanna? Hana? The younger Frozen Princes in her Coronation dress (Coronation, by the way, is an impressive word for a four year old to be whipping out in casual conversation - props Libby).

She also showed my her worm catching and butterfly summoning skills. A very talented little miss.

Zach Heckert has a Winning Smile ... and a Blog

So Mr. Heckert is a UVU classmate of mine and a stylistically supercharged fellow artling. He has given me helpful advise these past few weeks but possibly (hopefully in a way) more importantly, he has inspired me to ramp up my blogging. As such I dedicate this post, this sketch, and my 1:28 am cup of rootbeer to him and the early days of his own blog.

and yes, these are shameless (tributary) knock-offs

Something Old and Something Just Beginning ...

So this Mistborn picture is straight up fan art ... but I printed a copy and had the man himself (Brandon Sanderson) sign a copy ... and that make me feel slightly more legit :) I drew this in between classes one day when I found out he would be at a local game store. Seize the day! Anyways, this is the older drawing.

This is the start of my assignment for the week. It is suppose to be about a 'Mask' so I am choosing the plague masks from back in the day ... it still needs a lot of work and the theme of the picture could be really played up I think. I am liking the start of it and hope it goes somewhere good!

Despicable Me - Pen and Marker

I saw the two Despicable Me movies recently and, of course, loved the little minions ... so here are some drawings I did to celebrate them!

Digital Painting Class - A5 - Contraption

This week's Assignment was 'Contraption'. I really had to work this one around a lot to make it read okay but I am decently happy with the end result. I think I want to work on making a more dynamic composition next time and really focus on having larges light and dark areas in it.

Digital Painting Class - A4 - Temptation

Well ... this is a strange drawing for me. I love some aspects of it and I am greatly disappointed by others ... Having really like my composition in 'Mr Universe' this leaves me rather sad at myself. I wish I had an excuse. I do like the armor and learned a bit about blending in this ... I am just going to call it a step in what I hope is the right direction ... a step towards awesome. I need to refocus on composition and plan more contrast!

This is the final version ... I don't think the idea of temptation came across very strong ...

About halfway in when I had a different face, no woman, and colors that were not quite working.

Digital Painting Class - A3 - Universe

This is my favorite School Assignment so far. I like the colors, I like the composition, and I like the concept. Mr Universe as the governing power of the universe! With composition being my prime goal in this I see it as a success and became eager to see if I could have equal success with a flesh tone and earth bound figures. I also feel I could make my characters a little more recognizable.

Mr Universe in all his cosmic glory!

This is at about the halfway mark

Digital Painting Class - A2 - Retro

I felt this drawing was a bit weaker than the last ... though I kinda like the city-scape and the engine lightning stuff! It was suppose to be something retro which evolved in my mind to mean retro flying cars having a mobster shoot-out. After turning this in I really felt I should focus on composition in the next drawing.

The finished scene

Digital Painting Class - A1 - Voyage

The topic for my first week of class was Voyage. I really like the tone of this picture and I like how the two guards turned out. I wanted to do something of a space airport scene and decided some not-so-subtle propaganda posters would go well with it. There are quite a few jokes hidden in the flight names and numbers ... that was fun to do.
